Understanding Headache Types
The American Headache Society (in which Dr. Shirazi is a member of) has classified headaches into three main groups.Primary Headaches
The vast majority of headaches: Tension Type, Migraine Type, and Cluster Type headachesSecondary Headaches
Less than 10% of headaches, caused by either: bleeding in the brain, a tumor (a tissue overgrowth in the brain), meningitis and/or encephalitis (inflammation of the tissues that surround the brain, increasing cranial pressure). These headaches will not be discussed further here.Facial Pain, Cranial Neuralgias and Migraines
Chronic facial pain and cranial nerve-related issues can cause severe pain and discomfort and are sometimes mistaken for headaches. These conditions can arise from pathology from TMJ disorders or nerve compression.Find Your Path to Treatment
Common Headaches
Headaches come in many forms, and understanding the type of headache you’re experiencing is key to finding effective relief. Our expertise focuses on treatable headaches caused by tension, migraines, TMJ disorders, and related conditions.
Tension Headaches
Tension-type headaches are the most common form and often present as a dull, band-like ache across the forehead or around the base of the skull. These headaches are often associated with muscle tension, jaw clenching, or poor posture, leading to neck and upper back pain.
Forward Head Posture (FHP)
Forward Head Posture (FHP), often linked to jaw and airway issues, places extra pressure on your neck and shoulders, leading to chronic headaches. For every inch your head leans forward, your neck must support an additional 10 pounds, adding significant strain.
Migraines
Migraines are severe, often one-sided headaches that can disrupt your life. These headaches result from changes in blood vessels, usually triggered by the trigeminal nerve, which connects to areas in the jaw and face.
Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are intense, recurring headaches often centered around one eye or side of the head. While challenging to treat, these headaches can be managed with professional guidance.

Facial Pain, Cranial Neuralgias and Other Headaches
The American Headache Society (in which Dr. Shirazi is a member of) has classified headaches into three main groups.
Cranial Neuralgia
The primary symptom of cranial neuralgia is recurrent pain in the same area of the head, face or scalp. The severity of pain can vary greatly. The pain may fade, but is likely to return and it often occurs along the length of the affected cranial nerve. Depending on the type of neuralgia involved, the pain may be described in many ways, including sharp, excruciating, burning or shock-like with only the lightest touch to that part of the face or scalp needed to trigger it. In addition, some patients may also experience itching, numbness and muscle weakness.
Causes
The causes Neuralgias are many, starting most commonly with compression, irritation or a distortion of cranial nerves or upper cervical roots by a structural distortion; other possible causes are herpes infection, diabetic neuropathy, Tolosa-Hunt Syndrome (a painful ophthalmoplegia caused by nonspecific inflammation of the cavernous sinus or superior orbital fissure), or they may have a Central Origin, meaning from the Central Nervous System, which implies it can be ‘referred’ or ‘sensitized’ pain from the TMJ.

Chronic facial pain and cranial nerve-related issues can cause severe discomfort and are sometimes mistaken for typical headaches. These conditions often arise from TMJ disorders or nerve compression.
