In today’s ever-changing world of technology, it is important for healthcare providers to employ advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques. Dr. Shirazi takes great pride in offering these methods to his patients in a single location. Bridging the gap between time-tested oriental medicine practices and cutting-edge technology, the TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre provides comprehensive care focused on achieving wellness as quickly, easily, and painlessly as possible.
I-CAT TMJ ANALYSIS AND AIRWAY ASSESSMENT
The iCAT provides 3-D views of critical structures for complete TMJ analysis, allowing the doctor investigate and diagnose bone morphology, joint space, and function – all critical to TMJ dysfunction treatment and care. Most importantly, the iCAT can help the doctor to understand exact tooth/ bone position and relationship of abnormal anatomy, when treating orthodontic, TMJ and air way issues.
Three-dimensional imaging provides more accurate viewing of the teeth in relationship to other anatomical structures and fosters accurate treatment planning. Using a 20 second, high-speed scan, the iCAT captures TMJ open jaw views quickly and accurately and can detect restricted airways. Once the doctor has reviewed the scan, he can determine appropriate treatments.
iCat Enchaned Features:
- Fast Scan Time (20 seconds)
- Minimal patient radiation
- Comfortable design
- Fast reconstruction time (usually producing 3-D images in under one minute)
Joint Vibration Analysis / Jaw Tracker
Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA) records the vibrations produced by the jaw when it is in motion. Designed to only capture the “sounds” of the jaw joint, it accurately quantifies the amount of vibration from the jaw and allows the doctor to understand how the joint is impaired (because of clicking, popping, etc.) and categorize it. This technique will also assist the doctor in monitoring the progress of treatment.
The Jaw Tracker (JT) uses a small but strong magnet to record the way in which the mouth opens and closes and the position which is most comfortable. With this understanding, the doctor can better design an oral appliance to rehabilitate the TMJ and secure it in an aligned and comfortable position.
Through the action of photo-stimulation of light reactive biological receptors (chromophores) in the body, laser therapy has demonstrated the ability to significantly accelerate and enhance the body’s production of ATP and increase in biological signal transduction that stimulates repair in injuries, reduction of inflammation and adjuvant therapy in certain disease processes. Multiple clinical studies in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia have noted the following results and applications of laser therapy:
- Decreased pain levels
- Reduced inflammation
- Increased tissue proliferation & regeneration
- Accelerated soft tissue and bone repair
- Increased tissue tensile strength
- Enhanced nerve regeneration & function
- Increased cell metabolism
- Increased enzymatic responses
- Increased cell membrane potentials
- Increased microcirculation & vasodilation
- Increased lymphatic flow
- Increased collagen production
- Enhanced angiogenesis
- Periodontal disease
- Post-Extraction wounds
- Post-Scaling trauma
- Cold sores
- Canker sores
- Cranial suture stimulation
- Dentine hypersensitivity
- Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction
- Head, neck & shoulder musculoskeletal problems
- Myofascial pain
- Cervical neck pain

Pharyngometer / Rhinometer
Airway evaluation is an intrinsic part of diagnosing and treating sleep apnea. Using the ECCOVISION Acoustic Pharyngometer, which sends harmless and painless sound waves down the airway to measure its diameter, we can target the kink in the hose of your airway and set parameters for treatment.
Once we find the jaw position which will allow for maximum air intake, an oral appliance is custom-designed to rehabilitate the jaw in that position. This quick and easy process has been met with much success in our sleep patients.
Energex is a pulsed radio frequency tissue stimulation system that reduces the pain associated with TMD. It is a highly-effective, quick and painless in-office treatment used to relax the jaw joint so that the doctor can examine and diagnose the affected areas.
Benefits of Nightlase®:
- Increases the quality of your sleep
- Lessen the effects of snoring and sleep apnea
What is Nightlase®? NightLase® is a fast, non-invasive, and safe way for sufferers of snoring and sleep apnea to increase the quality of sleep. It has a high success rate in producing a positive change in sleep patterns. Research has shown that NightLase® reduces snoring and provides an effective, non-invasive way to lessen the effects of sleep apnea.
Nightlase® requires no device to be worn during sleep, involves no chemical treatment, and no anesthesia. There are no postoperative restrictions. If you suffer from snoring or sleep apnea, NightLase® offers a gentle and easy way for you and your loved ones to regain a good night’s rest.
NightLase® is a procedure developed in Europe that has been used safely and effectively there for over four years. The treatment includes three sessions of 20 minutes each scheduled three weeks apart. In every study of NightLase® so far patients report no to very mild discomfort after the procedure.
The procedure works through a phenomenon known as “neocollagenesis” which literally means “making new collagen”. Collagen is the protein in your body that is the basic building block of many of your tissues. The laser gently heats the tissue with rapid, comfortable pulses that cause the collagen to reorganize into a firmer and younger form. This technique has been used for a number of years in medical disciplines such as cosmetic surgery. When used on the face, for example, wrinkles are smoothed and facial muscles tighten. When this procedure is performed on the soft palate and throat it causes the muscles to become firmer and less prone to collapse. This instability of the pharyngeal muscles is a common cause of both snoring and sleep apnea. Over time snoring intensity , frequency, and duration lessens noticeably in over 80 percent of patients. NightLase® is NOT a laser surgery as no tissue is removed at all.
